As an Integrative Paediatrician how 将you describe the main difference in how you treat patients compared to mainstream paediatricians?

My approach to children’s health, developmental 和 behaviour problems is to look for a treatable cause – so for example if a child 与 a diagnosis of ADHD spends hours a day on a screen 和 does not get enough outdoor exercise I 将address the child’s lifestyle first. Another big focus is nutrition – children who eat an unprocessed wholefood diet 与 plenty of vegetables, little sugar 和 no artificial additives are generally healthier compared to children who eat a standard Australian diet which is high in fats, sugar 和 processed foods.

什么 are your top three tips that parents can adapt to assist 与 good 肠道健康 in their children?

I am mummy to a sensitive little tot who has many, many food allergies 和 intolerances.
My husband Scott 和 I have been on quite an eye-opening journey on our quest for health 和 healing.  I’m thrilled to say that we have seen amazingly positive changes in my daughter’s health by overhauling our diets 和 lifestyle.  The results have been slow but 压倒ly positive!

Over the following hours 和 days my husband 和 I soaked up the miracle that was our ‘Daisy girl’, but slowly things began to unravel.

In the hours following her first vaccinations she developed a high pitched scream 和 level of distress that will haunt me forever.  After speaking to a ‘nurse-on-call’ we ended up presenting at our local hospital 与 a nappy full of jelly-ish blood, 和 a floppy, unrousable child who 将suddenly burst into bouts of hysterical rigid screaming that could not be comforted.  Unfortunately life 与 a newborn continued to be a high stress time in which our daughter suffered 和 we 将receive no answers.

At six months of age – 和 six months of numerous doctors, hospital visits, IBCLCs 和 Osteopaths – she continued to suffer from extreme sleeplessness (she 将wake in distress every 2-20 minutes *every single* time she slept), reflux, passing blood, gut lining, 和 mucous in nappies, extreme gastrointestinal distress, constipation, vomiting, 湿疹, 和 poor weight gain.

During that time my mum mentioned a compounding pharmacy that made a product to help babies 与 “extreme unexplainable colic”.  I promptly visited this pharmacy 和 spoke extensively to the pharmacist who referred us to their in-house Naturopath.

Unfortunately I knew that things were still far from right 与 my little one 和 at 12 months of age I took her to see an Integrative Practitioner (both a qualified GP 和 Naturopath) 与 a special interest in 肠道健康 和 allergies.   他最初开了一些褪黑激素滴剂以帮助她在晚上安顿下来(那个阶段要花3个多小时才能使她安顿下来)。  He also ordered a comprehensive stool analysis, multiple blood tests, 和 urged us to remove any preservatives 和 additives that remained in Lila’s diet.

The result from the stool analysis was rather alarming 和 found that Lila had an overgrowth of some particularly nasty bacteria.  一种细菌特别引起关注,因为它会吞噬肠壁。  These perforations in the gut lining cause food proteins to leak out into the body (where they aren’t welcome) 和, to put it simply, allergies are born.  Unfortunately, until we could heal Lila’s gut we were to expect more food sensitivities to appear 和 her symptoms to either stagnate or keep spiralling.

As 压倒 as this was to discover it was a relief to know a little about what was going on.  令我感到绝望的是,抗生素的治疗一轮又一轮。  Going against my gut, we proceeded 与 treatment.  故事的这一部分对我来说很模糊。  But the gist of what happened is that after 5 courses of antibiotics, 和 a child in an absolute world of pain, I pulled the plug on her treatment.  一无所有 else to offer us our Doctor decided to take a ‘wait 和 see’ approach 和 I delved head-first into managing 和 treating what I call ‘Lila’s labyrinth’ on my own.

At two years of age we took Lila to a birthday party where she came in contact 与 dairy 和 soy.  Over the next three days we watched a complete unravelling in the health 和 happiness of our little girl.  Her reflux came back 与 a vengeance, as did her 湿疹.  After much crying 和 complaining of a sore tummy she passed shreds of gut lining, blood, 和 mucous in subsequent nappies, but most terrifyingly she experienced a series of worrying episodes that I 将later learn were “most likely allergy-triggered absence seizures”.  

This reaction resulted in a midnight visit to the Royal 小孩儿’s Hospital 和 a thorough assessment by one of today’s leading gastroenterologists.  Relieved 和 nervous we felt that we 将*finally* get our little girl the medical diagnosis that she (and we) so desperately needed.

幸运的是,没有发现这样的诊断。  相反,肠胃科医生告诉我们要继续“做我们正在做的事情”。  That her allergies are “real, alarmingly unusual, 和 may or may-not diminish as she grows”.  It was concluded that the level of antibiotics 和 antifungals that she has received was essentially like an “atomic bomb to the gut” 和 we should expect improvement to be 非常 slow.  Moreover she impressed the need to be “extremely vigilant” that Lila doesn’t come into contact 与 any dietary or environmental triggers, that is, until a controlled trial is scheduled in a few years time.

She has regular magnesium salt baths to help her body 与 detoxification 和 all household products 和 toiletries are as clean, pure, 和 homemade as possible. 

I manage this whilst I continue to read medical journals, papers, 和 research during the twilight hours.  I’ve come to learn that education is key, especially in the area of 肠道健康 where the research is still rather new 和 many doctors are often fairly ‘green’ on the topic.

Since completely clearing her 湿疹 nearly a year ago she’s never had a flare up and whereas 之前为什么有更明显的联系,这次 I’m totally baffled.

Food Allergy 和 Intolerance Friendly Party Food Ideas

  • 幸福球 – there is an abundance of recipes out there, or start experimenting yourself 与 seeds, coconut, cacao, dates, dried apricots, chia seeds, coconut oil, cinnamon, sweet potato, 和 any other allergy friendly ingredients you have.

  • Mini smoothies – blend some dairy free milk, fruit, 和 vanilla extract. Pour into cute cups or bottles 与 colourful straws.
  • Water is all kids need but infused water is lovely special party drink. Fill a jug 与 water (still or sparkling) 和 add in fresh lemon slices, mint, cucumber, 和 strawberries.

  • Meatballs 和 dipping sauce – mix some beef mince 与 grated carrot 和 zucchini, roll into balls 和 pan fry. They can be served warm or cold 与 a lovely homemade tomato sauce.

Here are a few tried 和 tested poses that may help your child 与 gut conditions:
